Familial 2-functors and Parametric Right Adjoints

چکیده

We define and study familial 2-functors primarily with a view to the development of the 2-categorical approach to operads of [Weber, 2005]. Also included in this paper is a result in which the well-known characterisation of a category as a simplicial set via the Segal condition, is generalised to a result about nice monads on cocomplete categories. Instances of this general result can be found in [Leinster, 2004], [Berger, 2002] and [Moerdijk-Weiss, 2007b]. Aspects of this general theory are then used to show that the composite 2-monads of [Weber, 2005] that describe symmetric and braided analogues of the ω-operads of [Batanin, 1998], are cartesian 2-monads and their underlying endo-2-functor is familial. Intricately linked to the notion of familial 2-functor is the theory of fibrations in a finitely complete 2-category [Street, 1974] [Street, 1980a], and those aspects of that theory that we require, that weren’t discussed in [Weber, 2007], are reviewed here.

Digraph functors which admit both left and right adjoints

For our purposes, two functors Λ and Γ are said to be adjoint if for any digraphs G and H, there exists a homomorphism of Λ(G) to H if and only if there exists a homomorphism of G to Γ(H). We investigate the right adjoints characterised by Pultr in [A. Pultr, The right adjoints into the categories of relational systems, In Reports of the Midwest Category Seminar, IV, volume 137 of Lecture Notes...

A Note on Actions of a Monoidal Category

An action ∗ : V × A−→ A of a monoidal category V on a category A corresponds to a strong monoidal functor F : V−→ [A,A] into the monoidal category of endofunctors of A. In many practical cases, the ordinary functor f : V−→ [A,A] underlying the monoidal F has a right adjoint g; and when this is so, F itself has a right adjoint G as a monoidal functor—so that, passing to the categories of monoids...

Induction, Coinduction, and Adjoints

We investigate the reasons for which the existence of certain right adjoints implies the existence of some final coalgebras, and vice-versa. In particular we prove and discuss the following theorem which has been partially available in the literature: let F a G be a pair of adjoint functors, and suppose that an initial algebra F̂ (X) of the functor H(Y ) = X + F (Y ) exists; then a right adjoint...

Limits and colimits in the category of pre-directed complete pre-ordered sets

In this paper, some categorical properties of the category { Pre-Dcpo} of all pre-dcpos; pre-ordered sets which are also pre-directed complete, with pre-continuous maps between them is considered. In particular, we characterize products and coproducts in this category. Furthermore, we show that this category is neither complete nor cocomplete. Also, epimorphisms and monomorphisms in {Pre-Dcpo} ...

On Adjoint and Brain Functors

There is some consensus among orthodox category theorists that the concept of adjoint functors is the most important concept contributed to mathematics by category theory. We give a heterodox treatment of adjoints using heteromorphisms (object-to-object morphisms between objects of different categories) that parses an adjunction into two separate parts (left and right representations of heterom...
